SEMI's Q3 2026 300mm front-end fab forecast projects spending growth through 2029, a decline in 2030 and a rebound in 2031. The retained analyst base case is 3–5 years of remaining expansion, with 2030 a warning to reassess the broader equipment basket rather than a certain common peak.
Runway assessment & checkpoints
Retained analyst base case: 3–5 years, roughly 2029–2031, with moderate qualitative confidence. The 300mm forecast is narrower than the eight-company equipment basket; the 2030 interruption is a review signal, not a calibrated cycle-end date.
- What to watch next
- Customer capex, equipment bookings and supplier guidance; reassess if SEMI changes its 2027–2029 path or projected 2030 contraction, or fab deferrals/export controls weaken orders.
- What could change the outlook
- A narrower 300mm spending series cannot time every supplier. SEMI projects an interruption, and diversified equipment revenue, export rules, customer concentration and excess capacity can change the path.
- SEMI 300mm Fab Outlook, Q3 2026 — 2026-Q3
- SEMI total equipment forecast — 2026-07-14
Expansion scenarios · original reviewed assessment
- Analyst expansion scenario
- 3–5 years
- Assessment
- The present equipment expansion plausibly has several years remaining, with a meaningful cycle interruption around 2030. This is the most explicit potential turning point among the three themes.
- Basis
- SEMI's Q3 2026 300mm forecast shows spending increases through 2029, a decline in 2030 and a rebound in 2031. From October 2026, a downturn during 2030 is about three to four years away, supporting the common 3–5-year band. The July total-equipment forecast and all eight company forecasts corroborate the nearer expansion. The latest industry series covers only 300mm front-end equipment, so its turning point is a proxy for the broader basket, not a date assigned to every constituent.
- Current cycle
- Expansion through the late 2020s; 2030 is a forecast warning year, not a certain peak date. Orders can turn before recognized supplier sales; no extra lead/lag adjustment has been calculated.
- Longer demand
- Demand for more complex chips and technology replacement can persist beyond this cycle; SEMI's projected 2031 rebound supports an interrupted longer opportunity, not uninterrupted growth.
- Shorter case · 1–3 years
- AI-related customer capex is deferred, export restrictions intensify or excess capacity causes equipment orders to roll over earlier than the SEMI path. Analyst scenario; no probability assigned.
- Longer case · 5+ years
- Technology transitions, packaging intensity and capacity expansion sustain supplier growth through the expected 2030 pause. Requires stronger order evidence than the base case; not assumed.
- Supplier connection
- ASML, AMAT, LRCX and KLAC supply wafer-fab tools and process control; TER, ONTO, MKSI and ACLS broaden exposure to test, packaging, components and implantation. The macro proxy does not assign common cyclicality or pure AI exposure to all eight.
- Next checkpoints
- SEMI revises the 2030 contraction or the 2027–2029 spending path; Multiple equipment suppliers cut bookings or forward revenue guidance; Customer fab deferrals or export restrictions weaken the demand bridge
- SEMI 300mm Fab Outlook, Q3 2026 · 2026-Q3
SEMI projects spending growth through 2029, a 6% decline in 2030 and a 9% rebound in 2031.
- SEMI total equipment forecast · 2026-07-14
SEMI's July forecast projects total equipment sales rising from $165.9bn in 2026 to $229.5bn in 2028.
China & Taiwan supply-chain exposure
Equipment, chip and device companies with documented China demand or Taiwan/China manufacturing dependencies. This is a concentration-risk group.
Primarily adverse concentration/disruption exposure; not a risk-beneficiary basket.

IEA projects data-center electricity consumption nearly doubling by 2030; JLL projects substantial capacity additions through 2026–2030. Supplier orders support an active buildout. The retained analyst base case is 3–5 years, conditional on funded projects obtaining power and converting into installations.
Runway assessment & checkpoints
Retained analyst base case: 3–5 years, roughly 2029–2031, with moderate qualitative confidence. The 2030 physical-demand outlook supports the buildout but does not identify a peak in equipment revenue.
- What to watch next
- Funded project starts, supplier orders, backlog conversion, utility connections and commissioned power/cooling capacity; distinguish delayed projects from cancellations.
- What could change the outlook
- Grid delays can postpone supplier revenue while extending construction schedules. Planned capacity is not committed spend; financing, AI monetization and broad company exposure remain material.
- IEA Key Questions on Energy and AI — 2026-04-16
- JLL 2026 Global Data Center Market Outlook — 2026-01-05
- Powell FY2026 Q3 results — 2026-08-03
Expansion scenarios · original reviewed assessment
- Analyst expansion scenario
- 3–5 years
- Assessment
- A multiyear power-and-cooling buildout is more plausible than a one-year burst. The main uncertainty is how rapidly planned projects become funded, connected and operational capacity.
- Basis
- IEA projects a near doubling of data-center electricity demand between 2025 and 2030. Independently, JLL models roughly 100 GW of additional capacity in the 2026–2030 buildout and identifies grid-connection delays. Building and fitting out that capacity requires electrical and thermal equipment before operation. Powell's reported data-center order and capacity expansion show that some demand has already reached suppliers. Together these support a 3–5-year base case; no source supplies an exact year of peak power/cooling revenue.
- Current cycle
- Equipment demand and construction are active now. Long connection queues can extend the buildout while delaying revenue conversion; delay alone does not improve the investment case.
- Longer demand
- Growth beyond 2030 is plausible if inference adoption, electricity supply and financing expand. It is the conditional longer case, not extra duration credited solely because a report includes 2035.
- Shorter case · 1–3 years
- Funding or AI monetization disappoints and planned projects are canceled; efficiency gains exceed workload growth or power constraints prevent project starts. Analyst scenario; no probability assigned.
- Longer case · 5+ years
- Funded new projects replace the current pipeline, grid access improves, and distributed inference plus higher-density computing sustain infrastructure spending beyond 2030.
- Supplier connection
- VRT and NVT offer direct power/cooling infrastructure; ETN and HUBB span broader electrical systems; GEV generation/grid, POWL custom electrical projects, TT cooling and GNRC backup generation have additional end-market exposure. Physical power demand is not the same metric as these companies' sales.
- Next checkpoints
- Cancellation or funding status of construction projects changes materially; Equipment orders and backlog conversion weaken across suppliers; IEA demand or JLL installed-capacity outlook changes; distinguish TWh from GW
- IEA Key Questions on Energy and AI · 2026-04-16
IEA projects electricity consumption increasing from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030, while emphasizing financing and supply bottlenecks.
- JLL 2026 Global Data Center Market Outlook · 2026-01-05
JLL forecasts roughly 100 GW of additional data-center capacity in the 2026–2030 buildout, with primary-market grid waits exceeding four years.
- Powell FY2026 Q3 results · 2026-08-03
Powell reported a data-center order above $400m and additional capacity plans. It establishes actual supplier activity, not a three-year revenue schedule.
Grid equipment & modernization
Grid hardware, engineering/construction and grid-control suppliers. Emerson supplies automation/software rather than primarily building physical networks.
Potential investment beneficiary, subject to funded projects and execution.

Airbus production-rate increases center on 2027–2029. Fleet replacement and service demand can continue beyond that ramp. The retained analyst base case is 3–5 years of supplier expansion; replenishment and aftermarket conversion must support the later phase.
Runway assessment & checkpoints
Retained analyst base case: 3–5 years, roughly 2029–2031, with moderate qualitative confidence. The visible production ramp is 2027–2029; the 2045 fleet forecast describes a structural tail, not years of uninterrupted supplier growth.
- What to watch next
- Production targets and deliveries, cancellations, engine/shop visits, fleet utilization and aftermarket growth; reassess if production plateaus without offsetting service growth.
- What could change the outlook
- Supply/engine failures, quality issues, airline financing and travel downturns can interrupt expansion. Cirium reduced its delivery total versus its prior rolling outlook; differing windows prevent a clean like-for-like revision percentage.

Expansion scenarios · original reviewed assessment
- Analyst expansion scenario
- 3–5 years
- Assessment
- The visible production ramp and supplier growth support a multiyear expansion. Fleet replacement and recurring service demand offer a longer structural tail, but do not establish five-plus years of uninterrupted supplier growth.
- Basis
- Airbus reports a large firm backlog and production-rate increases planned through 2027–2029. Airbus and independent Cirium forecasts separately anticipate continuing fleet growth and replacement. The analyst base case places the current supplier expansion in the same 3–5-year band as the other themes, allowing for conversion of the production ramp into deliveries and service activity. A plateau, recession or execution interruption could arrive sooner. Backlog divided by deliveries and a 2045 forecast endpoint are not used as years of growth. Continued aggregate supplier growth beyond the ramp remains the longer scenario.
- Current cycle
- The visible production ramp centers on 2027–2029. Later growth depends more on replenishment, fleet utilization and aftermarket demand; a plateau or recession could interrupt it before the structural need disappears.
- Longer demand
- Replacement and servicing can last much longer than the current delivery ramp. The 2045 forecasts describe long-run industry demand, not twenty guaranteed growth years or a holding-period recommendation.
- Shorter case · 1–3 years
- A travel downturn, airline financing stress, cancellations or production/engine failures interrupt supplier expansion before the ramp completes. A less severe ramp-to-plateau outcome would place the assessment in 3–5 years.
- Longer case · 5+ years
- Replacement orders and growing aftermarket activity sustain total relevant supplier growth beyond the production ramp. Requires demonstrated replenishment and service conversion; a long-run fleet forecast alone is insufficient.
- Supplier connection
- GE, RTX, HWM, HEI, TDG, WWD and CW have varying engine/component/service exposure; BA includes new aircraft and services. The basket mixes OEM, aftermarket, defense and industrial business, so the theme-level runway estimate cannot be assigned uniformly to each company.
- Next checkpoints
- Production targets slip or stabilize without offsetting aftermarket growth; Commercial orders, cancellations and service activity change together; Cirium/Airbus demand revisions show weaker replenishment rather than delivery deferral alone
- Airbus H1 2026 results · 2026-07-29
Airbus reported 9,222 commercial aircraft in backlog and production-rate increases planned across 2027–2029; A320 output is expected to stabilize after its ramp.
- Airbus Global Market Forecast 2026–2045 · 2026 edition; exact page publication date not displayed
Airbus projects 3.9% annual traffic growth and 42,060 new aircraft through 2045, including 19,820 replacements.
- Cirium Fleet Forecast · 2026-10-13
Cirium projects 43,000 deliveries through 2045 and 3.2% annual passenger-fleet growth. Its projected deliveries fell from last year's rolling outlook, while constraints still limit production.

NATO’s 2035 spending commitment supports a long planning horizon, but national appropriations and contract awards determine funded demand.

World Bank’s April 2026 outlook supplies a near-term commodity scenario. Company hedges, purchase timing and consumer price elasticity govern earnings transmission.
Runway assessment & checkpoints
2026–2027 commodity outlook; a conditional cost scenario, not a growth runway.
- What to watch next
- Cocoa, grains, edible oils, dairy, energy and packaging costs; hedge roll-offs; pricing versus volume; gross margins.
- What could change the outlook
- Higher input prices usually pressure margins until offset. Price increases may hurt volumes, and falling spot prices may arrive after hedge lags.
How the comparison works
Growth strength averages company forecast-revenue-growth percentiles against one common retained reference. Typical company growth is the median. The saved evidence-adjusted ranking determines the public shortlist. Numerical Company scores are available inside Matterhorn; Growth Strength measures the theme separately.
Each theme uses a business-fit basket selected before the new growth calculations. The shortlist ranks the reviewed, scored members—not every company in the market. Shared companies can appear in multiple themes.
Forecast revenue follows the provider’s company-specific definition. Banks’ interest and fee revenue is different from manufacturers’ sales. Risk and cost themes describe exposure and transmission, not a uniformly positive demand cycle.
Calendar-year estimates allocate annual fiscal forecasts by overlapping days. Growth change compares successive forecast growth rates; it is not an analyst estimate revision. EPS growth uses positive earnings endpoints; loss-to-profit transitions remain separate.
The reference contains 2,386 usable forecasts from 2,751 inventoried companies. Missing forecasts stay in the coverage ledger. Saved company scores use the same October 14 score snapshot; they are not a current production ranking. The original three theme growth percentages are unchanged; their normalized strength values change because the comparison reference is now broader.
Business-change checks
| Company omitted for check | Theme strength before → after | Median growth before → after |
|---|---|---|
| KBR | 35.2 → 34.7 | 4.5% → 4.4% |
| SPGI | 64.1 → 65.0 | 7.4% → 7.6% |
| DLTR | 43.9 → 42.9 | 5.2% → 4.5% |
These post-review checks keep the same reference and add no replacement companies. The published basket remains intact; company details identify the relevant separations and business changes.
